Chapter Fifteen

MJ Spent a good portion of her Saturday afternoon dolling herself up for yet another business dinner meeting with her father on the Adams plantation. She rode sitting across from him in their fancy carriage with her posture perfect as always, her hair frozen in strawberry-red spiral curls, and make-up meticulously pasted to her face, waving a hand fan that matched her dress. The weather had warmed considerably since the last time she had seen James in town at Albert’s General Store, so she waved her fan vigorously. She wanted to ensure that not one ounce of sweat had the chance to ruin her porcelain face or her hair before she was due to see James again. She wanted to present herself to him looking like a treasure, a prize that she was convinced he would just have to have.

Not only had Mary Jo calculated her attire, but she had even preplanned where she wanted to sit. She wanted to ensure that her perfume had better access to James’s nose and that her best side was always in his line of view. She had conversation prepared in her mind as well. As she rode along, she went over the topics in her head, smiling to herself as she imagined the possibilities of James’s responses. When she was not rehearsing her lines, she was imagining the look of surprise on James’s face when he first sees her looking so perfectly put together.

After speaking with him at Albert’s General Store months prior, Mary Jo had obsessively fantasized about James, the way she was now as she made her way to his plantation. For days on end, she had envisioned the things that she desperately wanted from him, some of which were considered unbecoming of a young and beautiful debutant like herself before being honored with marriage. But Mary Jo Parker did not care. When it came to James Adams, she was oblivious to all the rules. For him, she felt every law, rule, and regulation was worth breaking.

Being her wealthy father’s only child, Joseph Parker viewed Mary Jo as his most prized possession. He never once had the willpower to stop himself from giving his daughter everything she ever wanted throughout her life. Consequently, MJ grew to expect and demand all other people to give in to her accordingly, or else she would resort to screaming, lying, scheming, and stealing to get what she wanted. If her wishes were not fulfilled, the tantrums she would throw were dramatic enough to turn the head of a two-year-old child in the midst of his own meltdown. But, in the case of James Adams, Mary Jo did not just want him; she craved him, she yearned for him, she needed him. And despite the fact that she was an adult now, MJ was still proudly willing to stoop to childish, distasteful levels to have him, levels that would make the devil himself blush.
